Apple Uses DMCA Takedown Notice To Remove Leaked iOS Source Code

This leak is bad news for iPhone users

(Web Desk) - Apple confirmed that some of the source code of its iPhone operation system (OS) was leaked and shared on third-party website Github.

Since most of the iPhone users are now using iOS 10 or above, the source code breach of iOS 9 will not do any harm to the majority of the people.

The company said that the leak does not pose a security threat to users, insisting that "the security of our products doesn't depend on the secrecy of our source code".

Apple security is multi-layered, but users should still update to the latest possible version of iOS to make sure they're protected.

An unidentified hacker posted the source code for Apple's operating system on GitHub this week. Also, the reason this code is so vital as it is responsible for starting up an iOS device, or in other words, loads iOS in the first place each time the device is turned on. "It is not open-source", read the takedown request. There are no details on how ZioShiba got the iBoot source code, but after seeing it, we're certain it's the real deal.

Oregon Senator Faces Consequences and Pressure to Resign Amid Harassment Investigation
Sara Gelser, who filed a formal complaint against Kruse in November, said his resignation is not a moment worth celerbating. When news of the complaint surfaced, Kruse slammed the investigation as "a political witch hunt".

"Vendors relying excessively on code obfuscation to maintain the security of their products will always be vulnerable to leaks". However, the original leak was found to be associated with iOS 9, which is a few generations removed from the currently-available iOS 11.

According to Gizmodo, that same bit of code has been circulating the web since late past year, when a user uploaded it on Reddit. The code's widespread availability on GitHub means that hackers likely already have their hands on it. Once the phone is jailbroken, users are at will to run the software that are otherwise not allowed, or delete the apps that come preloaded on the device.

However, according to the security researcher Will Strafach, for the end users it does not really mean anything positive or negative.

In a statement provided to our sister site CNET, Apple said that the code was three years old, and is only one part of its approach to security.

"Apple does not use security through obscurity, so this does not contain anything risky, just an easier to read format for the boot loader code", Strafach told TechCrunch.
