US Troops With Syrian Rebels Come Under Attack, But No Americans Injured

US-Led Coalition Forces Strike 'Syrian Pro-Regime' Forces

USA military advisers in Syria had to call in American airstrikes and artillery support to repel an attack late Wednesday night by pro-Assad regime forces on a headquarters belonging to US -backed rebels fighting ISIS.

A USA official told the news outlet that it was unclear yet whether Russian operators in the region were involved, and that the US had also not ruled out the possibility of the involvement of Iranian-backed forces.

US -led coalition forces retaliated by launching airstrikes against the troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime, according to the Defense Department.

No U.S. troops embedded with the local fighters at their headquarters were believed to have been wounded or killed in the attack, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Iranian forces are known to be deployed in the area, as are some Russians, either of whom might be labeled as "pro-Assad" by the United States government, but the attacking of which could have substantial ramifications.

Officials with U.S. Operation Inherent Resolve said they hit pro-regime forces in response to what they called an unprovoked attack from President Bashar al-Assad's backers. "There are about 2,000 USA troops in Syria focused on the fight against ISIS", said Tom.
