The Apple Watch is being used to test confirmed cases of diabetes

Apple Watch, Android Wear Can Detect Early Diabetes Signs Study Says

One of the cofounders of Cardiogram also stated that one in every four cases of diabetes goes undetected, however, this methodology may significantly aid in reducing the rate of non-detection of the diabetes. The wearables' built-in sensor detected the deadly disease with the help of DeepHeart, which according to Cardiogram is a deep neural network instrument that makes use of algorithm governed by artificial intelligence (AI).

In this study, UCSF and Cardiogram researchers are looking to lay the groundwork for future mHealth wearables with more sophisticated sensors.

In order to validate its claims, Cardiogram, in collaboration with the University of California, performed clinical tests on almost 14011 patients.

In a joint study conducted by health app developer Cardiogram and the University of California San Francisco, it was found that smartwatches powered by iOS, Android, and other platforms are capable of diagnosing diabetes in advance with an accuracy of 85 percent. According to Cardiogram, DeepHeart has been used in past studies to detect atrial fibrillation, hypertension and sleep apnea. During that time, Cardiogram collected 200 million heart rate and step count measurements, and used that data to train and validate a deep neural network called DeepHeart that can distinguish between people with and without diabetes. But diabetes detection ups the ante considerably. The researchers were reportedly 85 percent successful in identifying people with prediabetes. 85% accuracy is far from flawless, but identifying-Cardiogram is careful in its announcement not to say they can diagnose diabetes-diabetes and prediabetes just from fitness tracking data is great. Better awareness of heart health, diet, and exercise-all of which the Apple Watch can help with-could help wearers in that period to improve their lifestyle and either stall or reverse the onset of this disease. "So the future this promises is that if you're wearing an Apple Watch, Android Wear, Garmin, something with a heart rate sensor, and your heart rate variability starts to decline because you're getting diabetes, you may get a notification or an offer to get a blood test". Cardiogram Cofounder Johnson Hsieh noted that in the early stages of diabetes, the pattern of heart rate variability shifts.

Ballinger says the study is a first step toward expanding the free app's abilities. "Over the next few months, you'll see us launch new features that guide you through the process of screening, confirmation, and referral to clinically-appropriate treatments for diabetes, pre-diabetes, and more".

And that's Ballinger's ultimate goal with Cardiogram, which recently expanded to Android Wear and is hoping to add Fitbit Ionic to its fold soon. The authors claim that these methods also outperformed hand-engineered biomarkers for detecting health conditions that have been reported in past medical literature.
