Researchers link spread of breast cancer and diet

GETTYScientists say diet and drugs could hold the key to preventing the spread of breast cancer

A study by the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute showed the nutrient asparagine helped foster breast tumours.

"A better understanding of the nutrients that help fuel cancer's spread is important if we're going to find new ways to slow the process down and possibly stop it".

The amino acid Asparagine, found in asparagus, has been linked with cancer tumour growth. In usual cases the mice had only a couple of weeks to live as the cancer would spread to major organs. They were also tried with drugs to block asparagine.

There has been an earlier study published past year that showed that the amino acids glycine and serine were important for the development and spread of lymphomas and intestinal cancers.

Reducing the amount of asparagine in the mice reduced the spread of cancer but had no impact on the development of their primary tumour, the journal Nature reports.

"It was a really huge change, [the cancers] were very hard to find", said Prof Greg Hannon.

Reese Witherspoon opens up about abusive relationship
I've changed, which is why I'm especially proud of Witherspoon for pointing out that those changes don't have to ruin you forever. Making the decision to leave her partner, whom she did not name, was "profound", she added.

The researchers cautioned it was too early to jump to conclusions about asparagine's role in human cancers, or to advise dietary changes. Simon Knott, associate director of the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, one of the first authors of the study said that this study adds to a growing body of evidence that diet can affect the course of a disease. Professor Charles Swanton, Cancer Research UK's chief clinician, stated: "Interestlingly, the drug L-asparaginase is used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which is dependent on asparagine".

They hope the finding may yield a method to prevent cancer cells spreading from their origins in a woman's breast to form tumours in her lungs, brain, other organs or bones - a process known as "metastasis" which is the most common cause of death.

Foods rich in the amino acid asparagine include dairy products, beef, poultry, eggs, fish, asparagus, beans, nuts, seeds, soy and whole grains.

"The next step in the research would be to understand how this translates from the lab to patients and which patients are most likely to benefit from any potential treatment".

"Further studies are needed to confirm whether this would have the same impact in patients".
