British judge upholds Assange warrant

Julian Assange package white powder threat court uk arrest warrant Ecuadorian embassy

A British Court has rejected Wikileaks founder Julian Assange's bid to cancel his United Kingdom arrest warrant, according to The Independent. She said that Assange had breached his bail conditions in 2012, while trying to avoid extradition to Sweden.

Judge Arbuthnot rejected a legal argument to have the arrest warrant against him quashed on the basis that with the Swedish case dropped there was no longer any justification for it.

A decision in his favour would allow him to leave the Ecuadorian embassy in London, his "home" for the last five years.

He's said repeatedly that he fled to Ecuador's embassy in fear that Sweden would hand him over to the United States to face charges over his release of classified military and diplomatic documents on his platform, Wikileaks. The Swedish case has since been dropped.

During the hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court, senior district judge Arbuthnot said, "I am not persuaded that the warrant should be withdrawn".

On February 6, a London court upheld the arrest warrant for Assange.

"His health issues are not that bad", said Arbuthnot.

Judge Arbuthnot adjourned the case until Tuesday at 2pm at the same court, when she will give her judgment on the public interest argument.

While the judge refused to cancel the warrant outright, she agreed to consider whether it is in the "public interest" to maintain it.

Assange - fearing extradition to the United States - also had "reasonable grounds" to skip bail in 2012, Mr Summers added.

The attorney added that staying in the embassy for so many years where Assange has no access to adequate medical care or sunlight has caused his physical and psychological health to deteriorate.

But even if Assange wins, he might decide to remain in the embassy because of fears over a possible secret US indictment against him.

This is just the latest development in Assange's ongoing legal woes.

Should she rule in Assange's favor next Tuesday, it remains unlikely however that he will leave the embassy immediately.
