Olympic gold medalists in new Russian appeal at CAS

Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev

"They request that CAS overturn the IOC decision and allow them to participate in these Games as Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation".

The statement comes amid simmering resentment in Russian Federation over its athletes being forced to compete under a neutral flag at the Olympics because of doping at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

"I believe that in the collective mind in a significant portion of the world and among the athletes of the world, that the International Olympic Committee has not only failed to protect clean athletes but has made it possible for cheating athletes to prevail against the clean athletes", said Pound.

The IOC hasn't said why any of the individual Russians weren't invited, but has said it used a newly available database detailing past doping when it decided who should be eligible.

Adams told a media conference: "A huge amount of work has gone in to making sure we can ensure that there can be a path for clean athletes from Russian Federation to compete in these Games here".

As well as short-track speedskating legend Ahn, the 32 include world cross-country skiing champion Sergei Ustyugov and world biathlon champion Anton Shipulin.

Last week's mass CAS hearings were as a result of allegations of a vast state-sponsored doping programme contained in the report into Sochi authored by sports law professor Richard McLaren for the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Russian officials requested invites for 13 athletes and two coaches from that group of 28, but were turned down by the International Olympic Committee, which has also rejected other Russians citing new evidence of possible drug use in the past.

Sport's top court CAS yesterday overturned Olympic life bans on 28 Russians accused of doping, a decision hailed by Moscow but a major embarrassment for the International Olympic Committee just days away from the start of the Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

Pound argues that "we talk more than we walk" on anti-doping, as the IOC allowed Russians to compete under the Olympic flag, rather than issuing a blanket ban.

A group of 32 Russians who were denied invitations to the Olympics because of evidence linking them to past doping had their case heard Wednesday by the Court of Arbitration for Sport but no decision was made.

The IOC president said he will attend the match of the joint women's hockey team between South and North Korea against Switzerland on Saturday.

CAS ruled there was insufficient evidence to show they had broken doping rules during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

A total of 168 Russian athletes were invited to take part in the Olympics, although the Russian Olympic Committee initially applied for 500.

Although it confirmed 11 others had committed doping offences, it reduced their lifetime Olympic bans to suspensions from this year's Games in South Korea.
