New PS4 5.50 Beta Firmware Update Released

New Features Coming to PS4 in System Software 5.50 – PlayStation.Blog

Registration for the beta test of a "major" new PS4 update recently began, and now the beta is officially underway. Family Managers can set their kids Play Time limits on the PS4 itself or through PSN on the web.

If you're anxious about your kids not playing outside enough, Play Time Management gives designated "Family Managers" the ability to set limits for when and for how long each child can play. Notifications will pop up telling them to save and quit as time runs out, but "family managers/guardians also have the option to add extra game time via their smartphone or PC", as well as the option to log them out remotely.

Finally, users can now upload their own custom wallpapers via USB, as well as zoom, crop and preview those images before committing.

Parents will rejoice, as there is a new play-time management system, allowing users to check and manage their playtime or even apply restrictions such as a daily limit via the Family Management tab within the settings. One slightly amusing caveat: users must put the image in a folder titled IMAGES for the PS4 to recognize them.

Apart from that, the new PlayStation update 5.50 will also reportedly make it easier for PlayStation VR owners to distinguish which games are playable on the VR.

Two new tabs are being added to the library for ease of access. The This PS4 Tab will contain all the apps that are installed in the console, while the Name/Avatar tab will show all the apps purchased with the PlayStation Network ID that is signed in. If your subscription has lapsed, games on the system will be shown with a lock icon on top of the PS Plus logo. In 'Options, ' you can hide content including betas, trials or demos of games that you probably won't be going back to.

Google reportedly working on video game streaming service called 'Yeti'
Google has started and cancelled gaming projects in the past, and right now there's no telling if this ever sees a release. Google is in talks with video game developers, but there is no information on how far along those conversations are.

PlayStation 4 version 5.50 also comes with certain enhancements to the Quick Menu, including a pulldown menu under the Friends tab. This will make it easy to look for purchased but not yet installed games.

Whenever you're listening to music on PS4, you'll be able to access certain shortcuts from the Quick Menu. And when you're on the Media Player or the USB Music Player, "triangle" will work as the shortcut for play or pause, and the "square" button as the volume control.

This update will give you the ability to delete old notifications for better organization and management.

- And if you stream games via PlayStation Now, you'll be able to play your own background music, just like you would with locally downloaded games. Just be aware, similar to when playing a game on disc or via digital download on PS4, background music may not always be available.

PS4 Pro users will see a new "supersampling mode" under Settings, which enables those with HDTVs (i.e., 1080p or less) to enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games. This update brings in a slew of new features and updates to the platform, the most important of these being the new "Supersampling Mode" that can improve the image quality of games that might not be properly optimised for the PS4 Pro on displays that are not 4K. That said, Sony warns that performance may vary with this, as various games are optimized differently. It's also possible that the full release could include more features.
