McCain, Coons push biaprtisan immigration deal despite WH rejection

Donald Trump

Trump has proposed steep cuts in legal immigration and increases in border security, including a southern border wall, in exchange for continued protection from deportation for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought to the U.S.as children and are living here illegally.

The White House panned the immigration proposal Graham touted along with Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin of IL, which included a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients.

That is the premise behind Democrats who are pushing for the DREAM Act, a bill that has been introduced since 2001 that gave this population of young undocumented immigrant their name.

Republicans in the House of Representatives were told at a Monday night meeting that the stop-gap measure would extend funding through March 23, along with a year of defense funding and two years of funding for community health centers, lawmakers said. McCain and Coons' bill would provide legal protections and a pathway to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who have lived in the US since December 31, 2013. In the meantime, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has resumed its handling of DACA renewals. Democrats agreed to the short-term bill in exchange for a promise from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to Democrats that he would bring an immigration bill to the Senate floor by February 8.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said this time he did not expect a repeat of the shutdown, for which both camps have traded blame.

It's time we end the gridlock so we can quickly move on to completing a long-term budget agreement that provides our men and women in uniform the support they deserve.

Suggests Nunes Memo Showed FBI Trying to 'Subvert Democracy'
House Speaker Paul Ryan has said he supports the release of the Democrats' memo, if sensitive intelligence information is removed. At issue is whether the White House will allow Bannon to answer questions about his time in the Trump administration.

A broader bill by Durbin and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was rejected by the White House last month.

When asked to clarify his remarks at the end of the roundtable, Trump told reporters again that he would shut down the government over immigration.

Besides protecting Dreamers from deportation, the McCain-Coons plan would boost security on the Mexican border.

The 690,000 figure refers to the number of Dreamers who were enrolled in DACA on September 5, 2017, when Trump moved to end the program.

"If you stick to what the Hurd bill does, it is about Dreamers, it is about security at the border". A federal court last month blocked the Trump administration from ending the program, and the administration's appeal is pending before the Supreme Court.

Chris Coons is pushing a modest measure with Arizona Republican Sen. But it does not explicitly provide money for a border wall with Mexico, the focus of President Donald Trump's immigration policies. Now he's putting that claim to the test with his immigration proposal. In his State of the Union address, Trump offered to support not just legal status, but a path to citizenship for almost 2 million illegal immigrants-the "Dreamers" who were brought to the U.S.as children through no fault of their own-if Democrats would agree to fund his border wall and limit chain migration. The bill would bolster use of technology for border security and call on the Homeland Security secretary to submit a border security strategy to Congress within a year for review. But that deadline is fast approaching, and such a deal does not seem imminent. "Make a deal!" the president said in a tweet on Monday.
