International Olympic Committee president addresses US Gymnastic Federation sex abuse scandal

The CAS decision was announced in Pyeongchang today

MOSCOW-Russian President Vladimir Putin has told the country's athletes to forget about doping scandals when they compete at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

CAS mentioned that while the Russians did not show systemic manipulation of the anti-doping system, the International Olympic Committee disagrees that they didn't take it fully into consideration.

Like the fight against doping, the efforts do not start and finish at PyeongChang 2018.

On Saturday, Head of IOC's Communications Department Mark Adams announced the commission led by Valerie Fourneyron would consider inviting another 13 Russian athletes.

Speaking at a news conference in Pyeongchang, South Korea, five days before the opening of the Winter Olympics, Bach said the International Olympic Committee had been told no full explanation of the verdict would be released until the end of February.

CAS earlier upheld appeals filed by 28 Russian athletes who had received life Olympic bans over alleged doping violations at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, reports Tass news agency.

Offering criticisms and purposing changes to the court it created is not only the IOC's right, but "its obligation", Bach says.

With regard to the participation of athletes from Russian Federation at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, the decision of the IOC Executive Board (EB) of 5 December 2017 remains in place.

However, CAS Secretary-General Matthieu Reeb insisted that the ruling did "not mean that these 28 athletes are declared innocent".

Patsev added that the CAS ruling "is just a good start for opening a constructive dialogue between the IOC, the global federations, the national federations, the athletes, and maybe the Russian Olympic Committee as well to determine the criteria on which the Russian athletes may get additional invitations and also for these 28 athletes".

Edney was a member of the mixed luge team which was belatedly awarded a Sochi 2014 relay bronze in December, when Russian rivals Albert Demchenko and Tatyana Ivanova were disqualified for doping.

The newer doping bottles were introduced a year ago to increase security after investigators found Russians were able to surreptitiously open bottles at the Sochi Olympics and exchange dirty urine samples with clean ones previously provided by the same athlete. "It's bigger than a medal, it's the spirit and integrity of sport".

"The IOC, we would never have expected this", Bach said February 4 in Pyeongchang, where the Winter Olympics start February 9.

"It is indeed the other system which the International Olympic Committee relies on - it is about issuing so-called invitations for the Russian athletes to be allowed to compete", he said.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for February 9.

In the meantime, Olympic leaders said they will review the court decision but expressed concern that it could set a precedent.

"This decision is extremely disappointing for AIBA as it hoped the IOC Executive Board would have understood that the processes necessary to implement even more measures require more time", the statement said.
