Severe winter weather & flu impacting blood donations

LRMC host blood drive as Red Cross pleads for donations

The American Red Cross says the need for blood has gone from urgent to critical.

In January, 10 blood drives across New Hampshire, which would have produced several hundred donations, were cancelled due to weather conditions, a news release from the Red Cross says.

The flu spreading across the nation has many people feeling sick, so many that the American Red Cross says they are running critically low on donated blood.

If you are interested in donating blood you can do so every 56 days while platelets can be donated every seven days up to 24 times a year. "One vehicle accident victim can need up to 100 units of blood", said Patty Corvaia, American Red Cross.

A combination of punishing winter weather and virulent flu season has resulted in a "critical" shortage of donated blood, the Red Cross said Tuesday morning.

According to the Red Cross, blood products are being distributed to hospitals as fast as they are coming in. "230 blood donors means 230 units of blood, which is a significant amount".

She said O-negative type blood is always in short supply this time of year.

There will be an opportunity for Ridgefield residents to give blood at the Parks and Recreation Center Thursday, Feb. 15, from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m.
