Twin auto bombs detonated near a mosque in Benghazi, Libya, leaving dozens of people dead and injured Tuesday, local officials said.

An explosives-rigged vehicle blew up in front of a mosque in the central neighbourhood of Al-Sleimani, a security source said.

A second auto exploded 30 minutes later in the same area leading to more casualties.

The second blast also hit an ambulance and caused a higher number of casualties than the first. The toll may rise, a spokesperson for the al-Jala hospital told AFP.

According to the news outlet, Brigadier Mahdi Falah, the counter-espionage director at Libyan Intelligence, was among those injured by the blast.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible. The BBC's North Africa Correspondent Rana Jawad said many bombings of this kind go unclaimed in Libya.

Forces loyal to eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar prevailed in Benghazi's conflict after protracted urban battles against Islamists and other opponents that left parts of the port city in ruins.

The United Nations condemned the attack on social media, saying that direct or indiscriminate attacks on civilians are prohibited under global humanitarian law and constitute war crimes.

There have however been occasional bomb attacks in Benghazi in recent months, often outside mosques.

Libya has been rocked by chaos since the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed dictator Muammar Qaddafi, with two rival authorities and multiple militias vying for control of the oil-rich country.
