Europe Reveals Plan to Better Manage its Plastic Waste

SUPERMARKET PLASTIC

The main targets will be items such as single-use straws, colored plastic bottles, coffee cups, lids, disposable cutlery, stirrers, and takeout packaging.

The EU has already taken significant steps by setting requirements for Member States to adopt measures to cut the consumption of plastic bags and to monitor and reduce marine litter.

The EU wants 55% of all plastic to be recycled by 2030 and for member states to reduce the use of bags per person from 90 a year to 40 by 2026. This will help to reduce plastic litter in land, air and sea while also bringing new opportunities for innovation, competitiveness and high quality jobs. Building on the Commission's past work, the new EU-wide strategy on plastics will tackle the issue head on.

The first ever Europe-wide strategy on plastics has been adopted today (16 January) as part of what the European Union describe as a "transition towards a more circular economy".

Frans Timmerman, a former Dutch diplomat and vice-president of the commission, that the plan will clamp down on "single-use plastics that take five seconds to produce, you use it for five minutes and it takes 500 years to break down again".

Europe generates 25 million tonnes of plastic waste a year but only recycles about a third of this. This is a challenge that citizens, industry and governments must tackle together. "As these packs are fully recyclable, Pack2Go Europe wants access to recycling in place for our products by the end of 2025 all across Europe".

The framework of progressive and voluntary commitments set out in the agreement have been taken on by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), Petcore Europe, the European Carpet and Rug Association (ECRA), the Polyolefin Circularity Platform (PCEP Europe), European Plastics Converters (EuPC) and VinylPlus.

Iran, Russia concerned over USA attempt to build army with YPG terrorists
The Syrian army is determined to drive out the USA from any involvement in the country, state television reported on Monday. Iran has been Syria's closest ally in the country's almost seven-year civil war against Sunni rebel forces.

The measures will also include the restricted use of microplastics in products and label fixation for biodegradable and compostable plastics.

The European Commission appears to be scrambling to curb plastic usage and increase recycling after China announced it would no longer accept imports of "foreign garbage" starting in 2018, the Guardian reports.

An extra €100 million of financing will be made available to drive investment and innovation in the industry, with the hopes of finding ways to develop a more efficient recycling process and removing hazardous substances and contaminants from recycled plastics.

It hopes to spur changes across the world and collaborate with global partners to formulate worldwide solutions and standards.

"The packaging we make is filled at the point of sale or just before serving and is designed first and foremost to guarantee food hygiene, protect public health and help ensure consumer safety in a world where people regularly eat and drink out-of-home or on-the-go", said Mike Turner, president of Pack2Go Europe.
