Erdogan: NATO Must Take Stance against US

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani

Erdogan said "the creation of a force" expected to be led by the SDF command and controlled by the PYD/YPG terrorist organization is entirely unacceptable to Turkey.

The US plans to train about 30,000 personnel to help prevent infiltration by IS militants across the Turkish and Iraqi borders and the River Euphrates, which effectively divides Kurdish- and Syrian government-held regions.

U.S. plans to help an allied Kurdish-led militia set up a 30,000-strong "border security force" have been severely criticised by Turkey and Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, the US-led coalition fighting the Daesh terror group refuses to say whether it gave portable anti-aircraft missiles (MANPADS) to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria, the Public Affairs Office of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) told Sputnik. Turkey, the United States and European Union have listed the PKK as a terrorist group.

"What we are supposed to do is to drown this terror army before in comes into being", he said in an address in the capital, Ankara, on Monday, calling the Kurdish fighters "back-stabbers" who will point their weapons to the U.S. in the future.

Half of the 30,000-strong BSF will be made up of Syrian Democratic Forces veterans fresh off their long fight against ISIS, while the other half are now being recruited and trained.

Ankara immediately objected to such a move out of fear the new force would be comprised of the YPG, which it accuses of being a branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) that has waged an insurgency in Turkey since 1984.

The Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia controls key Syrian northern towns including Manbij and Afrin and is an ally of the United States but Ankara accuses the group of being a terror organisation. He said Turkey would destroy this army "before it's even born".

Both Turkey and the US are North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members.

"The Coalition remains focused on our support to the Syrian Democratic Forces in defeating remaining ISIS pockets in eastern Syria", Dillon said.

Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member, said it would shortly mount an assault on the Kurdish-held Syrian town of Afrin, close to the Turkish border.

Russia, a major force in the area, opposed the US plan for a border security force.

But Erdogan has stepped up the warnings in recent days as Turkish media said dozens of military vehicles were being deployed to the border area.

"We will soon also destroy one-by-one the other nests of terror in Syria, starting with Afrin and Manbij", he vowed. Turkey is also angry at the support the U.S. continues to provide to the Syrian Kurdish forces that formed the backbone of the SDS, which led the military assault on Islamic State troops based in Raqqa.

Russian Federation also opposed the plan, saying it could lead to the partitioning of Syria.
