Markey, Senate Dems plan to force net neutrality vote

AG files lawsuit to stop rollback of net neutrality

Senate Democrats have already forced a vote on a bill to protect net neutrality, and on Tuesday, Democrats announced that they are now just one vote short of passing the bill in the Senate.

As of yesterday, senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said that all 49 Democrats, plus one Republican, senator Susan Collins of ME, supported a resolution for the restoration of net neutrality. He said he will file his resolution once the FCC's new rule is officially posted in the Federal Register, then force a vote on reversing the rule within 60 legislative days.

Specifically, the 50 senators support a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution from Sen. Edward Markey's office said. That means it would only need two non-Democratic supporters to pass.

Markey said Senate Democrats will spend the coming months building grassroots support for the effort - an issue which he noted millennials watching closely.

"What's become clear over the past year is that despite an intense public relations effort to pull the wool over Republican voters' eyes in order to turn net neutrality into a partisan issue, most conservatives outside Washington aren't buying it", advocacy group Demand Progress said today. "There will be a political price to pay for those who are on the wrong side of the internet's history".

Democrats say they now have 50 votes in favor of their bill. The order reclassified the Internet as an "information service", compared to the agency's 2015 net neutrality order, which regulated the Internet as a public monopoly. As we've previously reported, Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) is pushing an "Open Internet Preservation Act" that would ban blocking and throttling but allow ISPs to create paid fast lanes and prohibit state governments from enacting their own net neutrality laws. ISPs argued that the rules blocked them from deploying new business models. So there's still little chance this move will be successful in restoring net neutrality. The 2015 decision had imposed the concept of "Net Neutrality", which required broadband internet service providers to treat all data equally and prohibited them from discriminating or charging fees differently based on factors related to the user, the content, or the platform.
