Suspect arrested in University of Pennsylvania student Blaze Bernstein's death ID'd

Details Emerge in Missing OC Teens Homicide Case

Authorities on Friday arrested a friend in the killing of a 19-year-old University of Pennsylvania student whose body was found buried in a shallow grave at a California park.

Barnes said DNA evidence connected Woodward to the crime, though he did not elaborate further.

The pair knew each other from high school, according to multiple reports.

Barnes says Woodward was the last person to see Blaze Bernstein alive.

Bernstein, 19, went missing overnight on January 2 after he and the friend reportedly had met up that night and later drove to Borrego Park, near Bernstein's parents' home in Foothill Ranch, roughly 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Detectives said, however, that the friend's story - which included driving away from the park where he had dropped off Bernstein after not hearing from him for an hour - "stayed fairly consistent" across two interviews. The affidavit also reportedly stated that Woodward attributed the scratches and abrasions to a "fight club".

When the Sheriff's Department initially interview Woodward, he said that he dropped Bernstein off at the park and waited for an hour in the vehicle. That was the last time Bernstein was reported to have been seen, authorities said.

Sheriff's homicide Sgt. Don Voght said it appears Woodward altered his appearance somewhat during the search and investigation. He was reported missing the following day after his loved ones were unable to get in contact with him.

Bernstein's body was found Tuesday after recent rains partially exposed it.

Orange County police named the suspect arrested as Samuel Woodward, 20. Several hundred community members held a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening to remember the college sophomore, who had been home visiting his family on winter break.

At the press conference, Annee Della Donna, an attorney for the Bernstein family said they were grateful for the work of local law enforcement in this past week.

Bernstein's mother, Jeanne Pepper, responded to news of the arrest on Twitter, writing, "Finally". A spokeswoman for Orange County Superior Court said the document obtained by the newspaper was later placed under seal. "My thoughts are: Revenge is empty".

"Nothing will bring back my son so we ask the world to please honor Blaze's memory by doing an act of kindness today - don't wait - do it now", the grieving mom told the Los Angeles Times. "My only hopes are that he will never have the opportunity to hurt anyone else again and that something meaningful can come from the senseless act of Blaze's murder", her statement said, in part. He said he left the park at 1 a.m. and drove to his girlfriend's house in Tustin and then returned to the park at about 3:40 a.m. after Bernstein still had not responded. The detectives noticed hiking and camping equipment in the rear of the vehicle, a large empty plastic bin on the backseat, and a black belt on the passenger seat floorboard.

Blaze Bernstein's family knew something was wrong.
