Song of Norway To Trump: Fight Climate Change

Trump: US could 'conceivably' stay in Paris climate pact

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States "could conceivably" return to the Paris Climate Accord, which sets out a global action plan to avoid unsafe climate change by limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius.

In a press briefing held with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg on January 10, President Donald Trump said that USA could "conceivably" re-enter into global climate change mitigation efforts under the Paris accord.

Last June, Trump angered global businesses and politicians by announcing the USA would be leaving the worldwide climate accord, which was signed by the Obama administration and counts every nation on earth as a signatory until the United States formally quits the deal in 2020.

"Norway is a great customer, and a great ally and a great friend", Trump says. "We have a total of 52 and they've delivered a number of them already a little ahead of schedule". "We are a country rich in gas and coal and oil, and lots of other things, and there was a tremendous penalty for using it".

"It wasn't a major topic, I must tell you, we talked about other things, including mostly trade", said Trump, who boasted that the USA had a trade surplus with Norway. "It took a lot of our asset values". At the time, he said the U.S. But he will have to wait until 2019 to formally notify the United Nations of a US exit under the agreement's regulations.

Moreover, the agreement hurt U.S. businesses overall and gave advantages to other countries such as China, Trump added.

Since then, administration officials have sought to clarify the terms under which Trump would reverse his decision.

During the briefing, Trump appeared to stress that his administration is "very strong" on the environment.

"The Paris accord really would have taken away our competitive edge, and we're not going to let that happen, I'm not going to let this happen", President Trump said.

"It treated the United States very unfairly and frankly, it's an agreement that I have no problem with, but I had a problem with the agreement that they signed", he added.
