Trump has seemed to deny using those words but acknowledged on Twitter that he used "tough" language during White House negotiations this week with lawmakers on an immigration bill.

The reference was to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which shields from deportation almost 800,000 immigrants brought to the country illegally as children.

Two days after President Trump described African nations, along with Haiti and El Salvador, as "shithole countries" whose inhabitants were not desirable as immigrants to the United States, the president of Ghana called the language used by the American leader "extremely unfortunate" and said that his nation was not a "shithole country".

Anthony Scaramucci, whose brief tenure as White House communications director ended shortly after his expletive-filled comments about his administration colleagues appeared in The New Yorker, said Trump "is not a racist".

"Made up by Dems", he tweeted.

In November, the Trump administration announced it was ending the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that has allowed 59,000 Haitians to legally work in the United States since 2010 when an natural disaster killed an estimated 300,000 people, leaving millions homeless.

But the government of Haiti - which Friday marked the eighth anniversary of a devastating quake that killed at least 200,000 people - declared itself "outraged and shocked" by the "racist" slur.

According to the Central Intelligence Agency fact book, Haiti is 95 percent black; El Salvador is 86.3 percent Mestizo - mixed race of native Indians and Spaniards - with 83.2 percent of Norway white.

Trump denies using the term.

The State Department appeared to have gone into damage-repair mode.

The 55-nation African Union condemned the remarks while the southern African state of Botswana hauled in the USA ambassador to complain.

Trump's language triggered a barrage of criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.

Lewis said that Trump had undermined 25 years of African goodwill towards the U.S.

Notably, Trump has been calling for merit-based immigration, of which people from countries like India could be a major beneficiary.

On Wednesday, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg had visited the White House and was praised by Trump for running a trade deficit with the United States and for buying U.S. military equipment. "For one, Donald Trump isn't their president".

Akufo-Addo's predecessor, John Dramani Mahama, also criticized Trump's comments in a tweet on Saturday.

Republican lawmakers who were in the Thursday meeting generally sidestepped questions about precisely what Trump said.

Trump did not publicly address the controversy during the ceremony and ignored repeated questions about it from reporters in the room.

However Juba businesswoman Jenny Jore, 31, told AFP that Trump's remarks were "on point". He has emerged as a leader in negotiations over how to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, a 2012 executive order from President Barack Obama protecting roughly 800,000 immigrants from deportation who were brought to the country illegally by their parents as young children.

Karl Racin, who is Haitian-American, told As It Happens host Carol Off he's had enough of Trump's racist rhetoric - and his unsafe anti-immigration policies.

The public report from Trump's upcoming exam was also likely to be short and sweet, said George Annas, head of the Center for Health Law, Ethics and Human Rights at Boston University School of Public Health.
