Of Rochester's sexual misconduct probe, but president to resign

University of Rochester professor Celeste Kidd alleges that a professor sexually harassed her as a graduate

Eight former professors and a former graduate student in the university's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences filed lawsuits in 2017 after citing that "poor investigative work" was performed during the investigation. It found that Jaeger was "flirtatious" with students and blurred boundaries between the professional and personal, such as by renting a room to a female graduate student, making sexual comments or innuendos and regularly socializing with students.

Instead, Thursday brought another, unexpected announcement: President Joel Seligman (right) will resign, effective February 28. It said there was no retaliation by the university against the accusers. Joel Seligman, the president of the university, stepped down January 11, 2018, just hours before an outside investigation cleared him and his administration Ð including JaegerÐ of charges that they had covered up sexual harassment by a prominent professor and punished those who spoke out against him.

"I would have to say that President Seligman's resignation is some vindication that what we were doing (raising the complaints) is right", Richard Aslin, a University of Rochester researcher who sued Seligman and the institution for improperly investigating Jaeger and retaliating against those who complained, tells the Democrat & Chronicle.

In an sent email to University of Rochester students, faculty and staff, he wrote that "the best interests of the University are best served with new leadership, and a fresh perspective to focus on healing our campus and moving us forward in a spirit of cooperation and unity".

Seligman announced his decision to the University's Board of Trustees before the findings of the independent investigation, led by former SEC chair Mary Jo White, were presented to the board.

Eight faculty members and a graduate student a year ago filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, saying the university mishandled complaints against Jaeger and retaliated against them for bringing the professor's behavior to light. Jessica Cantlon, a professor at the university said that they attacked her privacy and reputation and that even their colleagues refused to work with them anymore.

He was re-elected in 2008 on PML-Q ticket and served as minister in Nawab Aslam Raisani's cabinet during its five-year tenure. The chief minister said "I am grateful to all the members of the assembly for supporting us in the no-confidence motion".

"We have systematically promoted the complainants, we have supported them in receiving awards, we have given them pay increases".

Investigators found Rochester made other, serious mistakes in the case that likely deepened on-campus rifts - including monitoring and sharing some department members' emails about the case with their chair without their knowledge, ostensibly to help him understand their concerns about Jaeger. "Ever better is what the University of Rochester is all about".

She listed several recommendations, including prohibiting intimate relationships between faculty and students in the same department.

"Set the bar, and set it high", she said.

Jaeger issued a statement of apology this week.

The complainants, at a news conference, called the report incomplete and said their legal fight would continue.
