Iran rejects Donald Trump's 'desperate attempt' to undermine nuclear deal

Trump again waives sanctions against Iran

However, the president specified it would be the last time he signs the waiver unless the deal is modified.

In his lengthy statement, Trump said the US would work with European partners to remove the nuclear deal's so-called "sunset clauses", which allow Iran to gradually resume advanced atomic activity.

In a telephone conversation with Trump on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated "the determination of France to support the strict implementation of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and the importance of it being respected by all signatories", said the Elysee Palace.

Despite the Iran nuclear deal, the U.S. has kept on slapping separate sanctions on Iran, accusing the country of having a ballistic missiles program as well as human rights abuses. Mr. Trump is expected to decide by Friday whether to extend the sanctions relief or re-impose the restrictions his predecessor, President Barack Obama, suspended two years ago.

"These provisions must have no expiration date".

This was the third time that Mr Trump was persuaded by his most senior national security officials and the leaders of allied governments that the costs of blowing up the deal outweigh the benefits.

Iran has complained that United States sanctions not connected to nuclear activity have effectively cancelled out any financial benefits it expected from the 2015 deal.

"Trump's policy & today's announcement amount to desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement", Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said in a tweet on Friday.

In his October remarks, Trump said he would keep a campaign promise to rip up the deal if it came to that.

Iran warned in August that it could return "within five days" to high-level enrichment if the USA pulled out of the deal.

That balance is aimed at satisfying Trump's demand to raise pressure on Iran, while not embarking on a frontal assault on the most central trade-offs of the nuclear agreement.

The US Treasury said Larijani, the brother of Iran's parliamentary speaker and former nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, is to blame for the torture and degrading treatment of prisoners.

"It is incumbent on those who oppose the JCPOA to come up with that better solution, because we have not seen it so far".

US President Donald Trump has heavily criticized the deal and threatened to kill it.

"Is he bluffing? I don't think so". "It's been four months and Congress has yet to deal with the issue". That will be coupled with diplomacy with European governments addressing Iran's missile testing and support for the Hezbollah terror group, Shiite rebels in Yemen and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

On Thursday, the foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany threw their weight behind the pact limiting Iran's nuclear ambitions and insisted that Iran is respecting it.

"This could be one of Washington's big foreign policy mistakes, a big miscalculation in American policy", he said.

"The UK has a clear position on the Iran nuclear deal: we regard it as a crucial agreement that makes the world a safer place by neutralizing the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran", the British Foreign Office said.

Tillerson suggested during his interview with the AP on Friday that Trump was leaning toward allowing the deal to remain as is while Congress continues to work to address his outlined issues. Would you rather deal with those things with Iran having nuclear weapons or not having them? It also could hand Iran a pretext to start limiting United Nations inspections or restart its nuclear program. This would presumably save President Trump from continuing to either defy his own views of the JCPOA or court worldwide condemnation by decertifying it, only to take little or no further action against it.
