United States embassy in London corrects Trump over 'bad deal'

Sources close to the US President claim he will be visiting London on an official visit some time within the next 12 months

President has canceled a trip to London where he had been expected to open the new $1 billion, avoiding protests promised by political opponents.

Some British lawmakers questioned whether Trump would be welcome in London because of previous tweets and criticism of Muslims and his sniping at London Mayor Sadiq Khan in the aftermath of a terror attack in that city past year.

Trump said on Twitter he canceled the visit because the USA embassy's former location was sold at a "bad deal". The new building was the most advanced USA embassy in the world and "did not cost the U.S. taxpayer a cent", he said, being financed by the sale of the old site and other London properties.

He tweeted late on Thursday that he was not a big fan of the Obama administration that sold "perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for "peanuts", only to build a new one in an "off" location for $1.2 billion, Xinhua news agency reported. "Bad deal. Wanted me to cut the ribbon - NO!"

The move was announced in 2008, before President Barack Obama was elected. "This just reinforces what a mistake it was for Theresa May to rush and extend an invitation of a state visit in the first place". She suggested a formal visit could still, but offered no details.

Donald Trump is not welcome here: London Mayor Sadiq Khan

"It's disappointing", Nigel Farage, the former leader of the UK Independence Party told BBC Radio's Today program on Friday. But Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson blamed Khan and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn for discouraging the US leader from coming.

However, London's mayor Sadiq Khan, who has been a target of Mr Trump's twitter tirades, said the president had "got the message" that he was not welcome in the United Kingdom capital.

There has been speculation that his visit would result in mass protests, so people have been responding online with their own very serious reasons for not visiting London.

The U.S. presence on Grosvenor Square goes back to the late 18th century, when future president John Adams was the first U.S. envoy to England.

But the American presence has not been appreciated by the 's neighbors in recent years. It would have been impossible to retrofit the aging concrete building with the security measures needed, officials said at the time. A residents organization also complained the building's presence on the square put them at risk of extremist attack.
