Padmaavat: After Rajasthan, Gujarat bans film

Padmaavat banned in some states ahead of release

The film is slated for release on January 25.

The Rajput Karni Sena on January 10, reiterated its demand for a "complete ban" on the film. "They have changed the name of the film but that does not change anything", Parmar stated.

On December 28, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chose to give the film a U/A certification along with some modifications and suggested that its title be changed to Padmaavat to befit the source material, Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic of the same name.

UP's government lead by Yogi Adityanath has said that it would not stop the release of the film in UP.

While Rajasthan's Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has already refused to let the magnum opus release in the state due to mass protests against the historical drama by Rajput outfits, UP government is satisfied with the modifications ordered and cleared by the Censor Board.

While Rajasthan has banned Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavat, the chief ministers of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, too, have expresed their reservations over letting the film be released in their respective states. Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani on Friday said, "We banned the film based on inputs on the law and order situation".

He claimed that six states have announced a ban on the movie. We sought some time from the court in order to take instructions from the petitioner and arrange the screening of the film. When asked about the project's current status, PTI reported that Shahid said, "I am sure we will have clarity by the end of this year about when the film is releasing".

An official of the CM secretariat confirmed the news of ban stating, "The CM had assured the Rajput Samaj that he would ban the movie if sentiments were hurt".
