Donald Trump vows to shakeup libel laws after damaging book published

Donald Trump medical exam

"Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House" portrays the 45th president as surrounded by aides who believe he's unfit for the office he holds.

"If somebody says something that's totally false and knowingly false, that the person that has been abused, defamed, libeled, [should] have meaningful recourse", he said. And that bar is even higher for libel suits brought by public officials because of the power they wield in society. "Our current libel laws are a sham and a disgrace".

Prior to a meeting on Wednesday with his Cabinet, Donald Trump allowed cameras into the White House and made a few remarks that landed in the headlines. "I consider it work", Trump said.

"Our current libel laws are a sham and a disgrace and do not represent American values or American fairness", Trump said Wednesday. Nor did he identify what, exactly, the administration will be "taking a very very strong look at".

Mr Wolff said his book, which he says is based on more than 200 interviews with administration insiders, went on sale Friday (US time) in apparent gambit by the publisher to foil efforts by lawyers for Mr Trump to halt its release.

Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, filed a defamation lawsuit against BuzzFeed News for publishing, last January, a salacious and mostly unsubstantiated intelligence dossier that purported to describe how Russian Federation had aided the Trump campaign. Smith's stance is a rarity on Fox News which has become a mostly political safe space for the president and his White House.

Trump has floated changes to libel statutes in response to negative media coverage in the past, saying as recently as October that it's "disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write".

State courts and state legislatures are responsible for codifying protections against libel and defamation.

Trump's first run-in with libel law after winning the presidency came in January, when his transition team issued a retraction demand to CNN for a story on then-Health Secretary Tom Price and his unethical stock purchases.
