American Crime Story season 2: Versace family issue second statement condemning series

Versace family upset over Ryan Murphy’s new show

Thanks to FX's controversial series The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the Versace family has been in spotlight of late-and they're not exactly happy about it. Orth, who has worked for Vanity Fair since 1988, "never received any information from the Versace family" and instead presented "second-hand hearsay that is full of contradictions" to create a "lurid" and "sensational" story.

Alongside Ramírez and Criss, the starry cast also boasts Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace while Latin singing sensation Ricky Martin is slated to play Versace's longtime partner Antonio D'Amico. Written by author Maureen Orth, book is called Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History and covers the events before, during, and after the shocking murder of the legendary fashion designer.

"The Versace family has said its a work of fiction - it is not a work of fiction".

Ryan Murphy also defended the FX series at the show's premiere, according to Harper's Bazaar, although he acknowledged that the Versace family was "in a really interesting, hard situation".

Donatella also said in the interview that among the mistakes in the book was the assertion that Gianni had been weak at the time of his murder because he had AIDS. "The company producing the series claims it is relying on a book by Maureen Orth, but the Orth book itself is full of gossip and speculation", Versace explained in the email proclamation. In the book, Orth claims to have information on a medical condition that Gianni was afflicted with, which she found out about from a person who allegedly reviewed his post-mortem test results. "We stand by the meticulous reporting of Ms. Orth", they said.

"Versace is based on a non-fiction book by Maureen Orth that has been discussed and dissected and vetted for close to 20 years", said Murphy.
