Water pipe explodes at JFK baggage claim - and chaos rightly ensues

The passengers on the Kuwait-bound flight were booked into hotels and will be rescheduled on different flights

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said Monday it will investigate the water pipe break that added to the weather-related delays that caused a nightmare weekend at Kennedy Airport and will "hold all responsible parties accountable" - just as passengers struggle to hunt down unclaimed baggage.

The burst pipe flooded the arrivals area of Terminal 4, which serves 30 global airlines, with three inches of water.

Global flights to Terminal 4 were suspended and passengers who had already arrived there were diverted to other terminals, according to the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which operates the airport.

The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which operates the airport, said low temperatures after the storm made it more hard to operate ground equipment, some of which it said froze, causing further delays. While the water main break appeared to be weather-related, Cotton said officials would examine whether "any other failures" contributed to the problem.

A water main broke in a JFK International Airport terminal on Sunday, flooding a baggage claim area.

Around the world, airlines were reading that forecast as a green light to take off for long hauls to New York City. "It's simple is terminal 4 accepting inbound flights yet", @Pulido_Alvin posted exasperatingly in response.

Rajesh Varadarajan, a 41-year-old software consultant en route from India to Trinidad, whose connecting flight to the Caribbean had been delayed more than 24 hours, sat JFK cut a poor comparison to airports such as Dubai or Singapore, and newer airports in his home country. But for the thousands of passengers facing canceled flights, elusive bags, and a flooded arrival terminal, all with temperatures well below freezing, there has been very little to laugh about.

When JFK re-opened there was a scramble for gates, and many arriving flights had to wait for hours to disembark passengers. The incident also forced the suspension of global arrivals at the terminal.

The Port Authority said it will investigate a water pipe break that added to the weather-related delays all weekend and will "hold all responsible parties accountable". The Port Authority said it was deploying additional staff and providing buses to assist travelers. "These challenges left passengers on planes for extensive periods, as the airlines and terminal operators experienced delays in getting aircraft in and out of gates", the statement added. "That was kind of weird", said Mona Bismuth, 27, a passenger.

"This was a family of five, and the older daughter was heading back to college in Denver, while the rest were coming to Indianapolis, so they thought she would have to wait until Monday", Hawkins said Sunday evening.

"When the flight was suspended, I literally cried", she said.

The Port Authority believes the break may have been caused by the weather. "They said 'you're not going to get any luggage, so everyone has to get out of here".

Worldwide terminal operators intend to reunite passengers still in New York City with lost baggage by Tuesday morning, he said.
