Suspect shot, killed after opening fire at CMPD headquarters

Jonathan Bennett

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett was shot Thursday night after ambushing officers as they gathered in the parking garage next to police headquarters to discuss the death of a woman and the abduction of her child. Such investigations are standard when police fire their weapons. He has brown shoulder-length dreadlocks and a tattoo of crown "King" on his neck in the middle of his Adam's apple.

"He ambushed us", Police Chief Kerr Putney was quoted as telling reporters at a late-night media briefing. Bennett and White were the parents of an infant daughter.

Officials initially said the man had fled with the baby, Journei Bennett, but she was found safe and unharmed, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said. The officer's injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Bennett's neighbors asked him to turn himself in while he was on the run.

Records from the Mecklenburg County Jail show that Bennett has been arrested before and has faced charges including communicating threats and assault on a female.

"I'm at a loss for words".

Police said officers returned fire, hitting Bennett.

Investigators said they are searching for 23-year-old Jonathan Bennett. "I've never seen no aggression out of him", said Rahshawn Johnson. An officer was reportedly shot in the leg and was taken to a hospital.

Putney added it was doubtful whether there would be any body camera footage from the shooting outside CMPD headquarters because it was an ambush. "Unfortunately some people use that against us", Putney said, further stating that police officers have a "dangerous job".
