Sushma Swaraj,Shashi Tharoor spar over making Hindi official language at United Nations

Sushma Swaraj discusses ways to strengthen ties with Indonesian leaders

A war of words has erupted between Indian politician Shashi Tharoor and India's Minister for External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj over making Hindi an official language at the United Nations.

Tharoor, the former Under-Secretary-General at the United Nations, questioned the need to push for Hindi which is not even India's national language. Also, all member nations will have to bear the cost of making Hindi one of the official language of the UN.

"If indeed we have a Prime Minister or Foreign Minister who prefers to speak Hindi, they can do so and we can pay to get that speech to be translated", he explained.

Mr. Tharoor said, "Hindi has not been given the national language status in India".

However, Swaraj countered Tharoor saying he was unaware that Hindi is an official language of Fiji and is also spoken widely in Mauritius, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and many other countries. On several occasions Indian leaders have delivered statements at the UN in Hindi, including Prime Minister's statement at the 69th UNGA in September 2014, the address of Prime Minister to the UN Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, and the addresses to the UNGA by External Affairs Minister during its 70th, 71st and 72nd sessions in 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively. "Hindi is not the national language, it is an official language. To say that Hindi is only spoken in India - it is only a mark of your ignorance, and nothing else". She further stated that there are rules in the United Nations that make it hard for Hindi to become the Official language of India because the rules state that the decision should be supported by two thirds of the members. Seeking to promote Hindi raises an important question. "Government continues to make such efforts towards securing due recognition for Hindi at the UN".

"The government has to defend its position".

The government has rescued from Kenya three Indian and seven Nepalese girls, who were victims of an organised crime syndicate that indulged in human trafficking, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said today. "I understand the pride of Hindi-speaking people, but people of this country who do not speak in Hindi also take pride in being Indian", he added.

Sushma Swaraj said Hindi was spoken in several other countries as well as by the Indian diaspora overseas. "Sushma Ji and all those for Hindi...come learn the South Indians languages.they are lovely", the user tweeted.
