Norfolk MP warns government over impact of 'hard Brexit'

Brexit news Liam Fox Sadiq Khan

He said walking away from Europe without a deal would lead to a "lost decade of lower growth".

A report commissioned by the mayor's office and carried out by independent researchers at Cambridge Econometrics claims that should Britain leave the European Union without a deal in place, London stands to lose 6,000 creative industries jobs by 2030, with the country as a whole facing the loss of 27,000 creative jobs.

Softer Brexit scenarios, such as the United Kingdom remaining in the Single Market (preserving free movement of goods, services and people between EU member states), but leaving the Customs Union could possibly result in around 175,000 job losses across the country.

"Brexit and leaving the single market and customs union puts any hope of well-funded schools and hospitals and police on our streets under immediate and serious threat".

The mayor told Sky: 'This independent analysis should help guide the Government to the best outcome for London and the UK. Ministers are fast running out of time to turn the negotiations around.

The analysis by Cambridge Econometrics predicts that a no-deal Brexit could shed as many as 87,000 jobs in London alone, with the capital's economic output 2% lower in 2030 than what would be expected under a soft Brexit. He said the "complete lack of preparation" is "irresponsible", "astonishing" and that the Tories were putting party politics ahead of the national interest.

It says there would also be 92,000 fewer jobs in the science and technology sector, 43,000 fewer jobs in construction and 27,000 less across the creative sector.

"I've released these impact assessments because the British people and our businesses have a right to know the likely impact of the various options the government are considering on their lives and personal finances".

But Mr Khan rebuked the claim, saying he merely wanted to have an overview of what British industries should expect once Britain leaves the European Union. While the forward-looking Cambridge study is dealing in potentialities, recruiters on the ground in London question Morgan McKinley's historic figures for December: when it comes to front office recruitment, at least, they say they're far busier than they were previous year.

He went on to say that the government needs to change its proposition, to "negotiate a deal that enables us [the UK] to remain in both the single market and the customs union".
