Ford says some Rangers should be parked due to air bag death

JUST IN: Stop driving 2006 Ford Rangers now for airbag risk, Ford says

"We take this matter very seriously and are advising owners of these specific 2006 Ford Rangers to stop driving their vehicles so dealers can make repairs immediately", Ford said in a statement.

Ford said both Takata deaths occurred with inflators built on the same day installed in 2006 Ranger pickups. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford will "send mobile fix teams to owners' homes, tow vehicles to a local dealership for fix, and provide loaner vehicles - all free of charge". It was the second such fatality linked the same model and year, following another accident in January 2016. The inflators can rupture and send deadly metal fragments into the vehicle. It previously reported a similar death in SC that occurred in December 2015.

Takata said last summer that it has recalled, or expected to recall, airbags in about 125 million vehicles worldwide by 2019, and 19 different automakers worldwide are impacted.

Japanese air bag maker is recalling an additional 3.3 million faulty air bag inflators as it expands the largest automotive recall in USA history. The problem brought a criminal conviction and fine against Takata and forced the Japanese company into bankruptcy protection.

Key, which is based in Sterling Heights and owned by Ningbo Joyson Electronics of China, signed another agreement in November to acquire Takata for $1.6 billion.
