US Issues Highest Travel Warning For 5 Mexican States

The State Department debuted a new system for warning travelers about potential danger abroad

Reuters report indicates that at least a dozen politicians, officials and candidates for elected office have been killed in states in recent months, where there are struggles between criminal groups for the control of drug trafficking routes.

So, instead of issuing separate advisories, each country's status would be updated on a regular basis and American travellers can go to the State Department website and check out the country/countries they are visiting.

The advisory underscored the limitations that the USA government faces in providing emergency services in many areas of Mexico because US government employees are prohibited from traveling to those areas.

In Wednesday's revamp, an additional 11 Mexican states got a level 3 warning, which urges people to "reconsider travel" there.

In place of the previous system of alerts and advisories, the new ratings establish advisory levels (reminiscent of the now-defunct Homeland Security Advisory System) which correspond to escalating levels of insecurity. "Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Ajijic".

However, at least two Mexican resorts - Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo and Acapulco - are in a do-not-travel state, Guerrero, and a year ago, the State Department extended a total ban on personal travel by USA government personnel there.

Half of Mexico's 31 states are now under level 3 or 4 warnings. Personal travel by land and to the resort city of Acapulco had already been prohibited. The Department of State provides additional advice for travelers in these areas in the Travel Advisory.

But the government's Mexico Tourism Board said in a statement that "Mexico's major worldwide tourism destinations have been explicitly listed as having no travel restrictions", apparently a reference to major resorts like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Huatulco. Michoacan was so dominated by a drug cartel that vigilantes took up arms in 2013 to drive them out.

"Last year was Mexico's most murderous year in memory, with the violence spreading to tourist destinations including Los Cabos and Acapulco", according to The Guardian.

The U.S. government did note its employees are allowed to go to the seaside city of Manzanillo, Colima. Under the new system, every country will have a Travel Advisory, providing levels of advice ranging from 1 to 4 which is "Exercise Normal Pecautions", "Exercise Increased Precautions", "Reconsider Travel" and "Do Not Travel".

Trump said later he, but only if Congress can agree on a bill that also provides funding for a border wall and introduces other immigration-control measures.
