#MeToo: US Democratic lawmakers urge wearing black to Trump speech

Representative invites Congress to wear black to Trump's State of the Union address

Some female lawmakers hope to make a statement at President Donald Trump's first State of the Union address.

The movement is being championed by the Democratic Women's Working Group, which includes all female Democratic members of the House of Representatives.

During last week's Globes, celebrities donned black as a form of protest to show solidarity with both the #MeToo movement and the #TimesUp movement.

It is unclear how many women will join the silent protest, which is likely to draw attention to the numerous accusations of sexual misconduct that have been levied against Mr Trump himself.

Rep. Lois Frankel (D., Fla.), the chairwoman of the Democratic Women's Working Group, also called on members of Congress to wear black to the national address on January 30. In December, three women reasserted their allegations in a bid to renew pressure on the White House. Sixty-six of them are Democrats.

Farenthold said that previous allegations of sexual harassment made against him were "false", but acknowledged he had "angry outbursts" and that he failed "to treat people in his office with the respect they deserve".

Capitol Hill also was inundated late past year with allegations of sexual harassment by lawmakers and senior aides, prompting a debate over how best to hold offenders accountable.

Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., who is working on a bipartisan bill created to strengthen sexual misconduct prevention standards in the House, told NBC News that she is encouraging women and men of both parties to join the demonstration. The most prominent example was former Senator Al Franken, D-Minn., who several women accused of inappropriately touching them before he entered politics.

The wave of allegations of sexual misconduct have already resulted in resignations from members of Congress, and have sparked debates about the unique rules that Congress has established for itself when it comes to sexual harassment or assault charges.
