Israeli father-of-five killed in West Bank shooting

Pence to Visit Israel, Egypt, Jordan

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war.

Israeli security forces are searching for a suspected Palestinian gunman or gunmen who killed an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday.

Israeli authorities were due to approve on Wednesday the construction of 1,285 housing units to be built in 2018 and advance planning for 2,500 others in about 20 different settlements, Lieberman said in a statement.

The Israeli man was a resident of Havat Gilad, an Israeli settlement near the Palestinian city of Nablus on the West Bank, according to public radio.

Asked about the construction plans, a US State Department official said there had been no change in policy on settlements and the Israeli government had made clear that going forward "its intent is to adopt a policy regarding settlement activity that takes the President's concerns into consideration".

The U.S. -brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians reached an impasse in 2014.

Settlements are illegal under global law, and are considered as major stumbling blocks to the resumption of negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, which have been stalled since April 2014.
