Blood shortage prompts urgent call for people to donate

Blood donated to American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is making an urgent call for blood and platelet donations of all blood types to help combat a blood shortage, after severe winter weather caused January blood bank donations to drop by the thousands.

2017's hurricanes across the country, as well as wildfires in many states, including California, along with the current wintry weather on the East Coast has forced the nonprofit to cancel 150 blood drives. Platelet and type O negative and B negative blood donations - in particular - are critically needed right now.

The Red Cross says because of the cancellations, 5,500 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected.

Every two seconds, someone in the US needs blood - a need that is all too real for Heather Hrouda and her family. An emergency cesarean section was performed, but Hrouda hemorrhaged during surgery.

Supreme Court Weighs Purge of Ohio Voting Rolls
Helle said he had no idea his name had been dropped and said he mailed in absentee ballots in some years and not others. Republicans have argued that they are trying to promote ballot integrity and prevent voter fraud.

"My family and I are so thankful for all the blood donors", said Hrouda. "Because of donors, I get to watch my kids grow up and become the adults they dream of being".

With snow finally moving out of the area organizations like the red cross are trying to make up ground.

It takes over 3,000 blood donations a week for Bonfils to meet patient needs-and to be ready for the unexpected-in Colorado.
