The right-wing group initially gave her warnings on Facebook, then barged into her house on Saturday, telling her parents of her friendship with the Muslim man, claiming it to be a case of "love jihad".

MV Anil and four other Hindutva activists in the region are believed to have harassed the woman, a first-year commerce student, since she said mentioned liking Muslims on a WhatsApp group.

She told a friend on WhatsApp that she loved Muslims after being questioned over her friendship with the man.

Five people from Hindu hardline groups also visited her house on Saturday to warn her parents. One person Anil Raj has been arrested.

According to Annamalai, "There was a photo in which the girl is with a boy from another community and a lot of people have circulated this photo creating aspersions on the girl so we are also trying to find whoever has sent the photo to this girl by making any comment which would have hurt her to take this extreme step".

Local police officers have called it "moral goondagiri".
