French Prosecutor Launches Probe Into Apple Planned Obsolescence: Judicial Source

Apple apologized in December for secretly slowing down older iPhones

A French watchdog agency has launched a probe into whether Apple deliberately phased out older iPhones to force customers to upgrade to a newer model, according to worldwide media outlets.

On Monday, French prosecutors announced the opening of a probe into suspected fraud by Apple in the wake of a complaint by the group-known by its French acronym HOP-which accused the USA -based company of cheating costumers unaware of the flaws intentionally built into the phones.

At the end of past year, Apple apologised for deliberately slowing down some ageing iPhone models via software updates but said it did so in order to prolong battery life and not to force customers to upgrade.

Apple has said that it slowed batteries in order to lengthen the lifetime of its products, and that it would be replacing the batteries of all iPhone 6 and later devices if customers requested. This bummer, first reported by Bloomberg Tuesday, is based on consumer groups' allegations that Apple is intentionally shortening the life of older devices.

HOP said France was the third country to investigate Apple after the United States and Israel, but the only country where the alleged practice is illegal.

But he warned officials that a knee injury, over which he had worn protective strapping all week, could ruin his participation at his home Grand Slam.

The company has offered a discounted battery replacement service for several models of iPhone, and it has maintained it would never intentionally shorten the lifespan of any Apple product in a letter:"We apologise".

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into Apple, after a consumer group lodged a complaint against the USA tech giant over its alleged slowing of older iPhones.

Apple has apologised to customers while denying it consciously built in obsolescence, adding: "We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down".

It is no secret that Apple has been slowing down older iPhones. "While these changes may go unnoticed, in some cases users may experience longer launch times for apps and other reductions in performance". The work will likely take months, with the results given over to a French judge for further review.
