Shark found in wild could be 512 years old

The Greenland shark is believed to be up to 512 years old

The ice-filled water of the Arctic region houses the giant Greenland shark which might be the oldest surviving vertebrate in the globe as of now. According to a study in journal Science, experts used its length, which is 18ft, and radiocarbon dating to determine its age as between 272 and 512 years old. And you thought turning 30 made you ancient.

To determine the shark's age, scientists used a mathematical model that analyzes the lens and cornea of a shark's eye and links size of the shark to its age. The Greenland shark's meat is famous in Iceland, and these sharks release a certain type of chemical that develops similar conditions like that of a heavily drunk person.

Greenland sharks have been known to live for hundreds of years and spend most of their lives swimming around looking for a mate.

So, the scientists estimated that the Greenland shark that they discovered recently might be exceptionally old.

How did the researchers decide on the Greenland Shark's age?

If scientists have got the shark's age right, it would have been alive during major historical events like the founding of the U.S., the Industrial Revolution and both World Wars. Despite its considerable size, comparable to that of a great white shark, the Greenland shark is a scavenger and has never been observed hunting.

A shark captured by a research vessel may have been born when James I was on the throne of England - and when William Shakespeare was still alive. Its diet primarily consists of fish, though remains of reindeer, polar bear, moose, and seals have been found in the species' stomachs.

As numerous sharks pre-date the Industrial Revolution and large-scale commercial fishing, the sharks have even been called "living time capsules" that could help shed light on how human behaviour impacts the oceans. It is said to be 18 feet long.
