United Kingdom jobless rate lowest since 1975

Worker employment jobs

United Kingdom unemployment remains at its joint lowest level since 1975, while wage growth is beginning to pick up, according to the latest data from the Office of National Statistics.

Britain's unemployment rate remains at a 42-year low, official data showed on Wednesday, but workers' wages are still failing to keep pace with inflation.

That was the biggest quarterly drop in employment in more than two years - since the three months to May 2015.

Average earnings increased by 2.5% in the year to October, 0.2% up on the previous month, although pay is still growing at less than the rate of inflation.

It takes the total number of those out of work to 114,000.

Some 1.4 million people were unemployed at the end of October.

The number of people aged between 16 to 64 who were in work fell by 32,000, to stand at 2,555,000.

"We doubt the weakness in employment will persist for too much longer given that all of the hiring surveys that we track point to annual employment growth accelerating significantly from the current 1pc, while unfilled vacancies are at a record high", said Andrew Wishart at Capital Economics.

At the same time, total unemployment also fell, by 26,000 to 1.4m, reflecting an increase in the number of people classed as economically inactive.

ONS statistician Matt Hughes said: "Employment stayed close to its record high and, while up on a year ago, declined compared with the previous three months". Download it today and continue to enjoy STV News wherever you are.

Average earnings increase by 2.5% including bonuses - remaining below inflation.

Private sector employment fell by 75,000 to 26.5 million.

"Real wages have now fallen for the last eight months in a row and working people will be worse off this Christmas than they were a decade ago".

"Employment is at a near-record high, and there are over three million more people in work now compared to 2010 - that's more than the population of Greater Manchester".
