Netflix responds to backlash over 'creepy' viewing figures tweet

A Christmas Prince

The streaming service sent what it probablythought was an innocuous-enough tweet Saturday night, ribbing a few dozen of its users for partaking in a holiday-inspired B-movie binge.

What's Netflix playing at, exposing the die-hard Christmas Prince fans among us?

'Ok @Netflix you are creeping me out that you keep tabs on us like that.and just so we are clear, I'm a writer/filmmaker so all those horror movies with tons of sex and nudity were watched repeatedly for educational purposes only!'

Christian Christiensen then chimed in: 'Good to know @netflix staff are sitting around their offices looking at private user data, laughing about it, then sending out a tweet to millions.

Of course, people who watch Netflix should expect that the company knows both what you're watching and how frequently you watch it.

Beware Netflix-bingers, beware. In fact, Hallmark has a 2015 movie called Charming Christmas that may resemble Netflix's Christmas Inheritance, but that doesn't mean the new film still isn't worth watching.

'So unknown creepy Netflix staff have access to your viewing data, use it to creep on you, laugh at you, maybe publicly, ' Ben Goldacre shared on his Twitter account.

After a barrage of complaints, Netflix responded on Tuesday with a statement that read: "The privacy of our members' viewing is important to us". Other "highlights" have included calling out a Brit who has watched Bee Movie 357 times this year and a U.S. customer who watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl 365 days in a row.
