Accused NYC bomber to formally face terrorism charges as soon as Wednesday

Bangladeshi national Akayed Ullah told investigators he was retaliating against US military aggression

Investigators at the scene found a nine-volt battery inside Ullah's trousers pocket, as well as fragments from a metal pipe and the remnants of what appeared to be a Christmas tree light bulb attached to wires.

Akayed Ullah, 27, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, support act of terrorism, and making a terroristic threat.

Four other people suffered minor injuries.

Akayed Ullah was expected to appear before a magistrate judge after a criminal complaint was made public Tuesday.

The bus terminal, which serves as a hub for several subway lines and bus services operated by companies such as Greyhound, was evacuated following the 7:20 a.m. explosion in a passageway connecting Times Square to Eighth Avenue, officials said. That classification means Ullah was the child of someone who is the sibling of a US citizen.

Akayed Ullah, a Bangladeshi man who attempted to detonate a homemade bomb strapped to his body at a NY commuter hub during morning rush hour is seen in this handout photo received December 11, 2017.

He said police had raided the family home in Dhaka and questioned Ullah's 25-year-old wife, Jannatul Ferdous Piya and her father, but that neither was under any suspicion. They said it was strapped to his body with wires and zip ties. He could get up to life in prison.

According to the complaint, Ullah started to become radicalized in 2014 and began researching how to build bomb after he had "viewed pro-ISIS materials online, including a video instructing, in substance, that if supporters of ISIS were unable to travel overseas to join ISIS, they should carry out attacks in their homelands".

Authorities also searched Ullah's Brooklyn home and a nearby rented space and interviewed witnesses and relatives, leading his family to say they were "outraged" by law enforcement.

Investigators were poring through data on Ullah's electronic devices, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In reaction to the bombing, Trump demanded a tightening of immigration rules.

The president also criticized the visa program that allowed Ullah to enter the United States in 2011 because he had family members already in the country, saying such family visas are "incompatible with national security".

"We're going to end both of them - the lottery system and chain migration".

Ullah held a for-hire vehicle driver's license with the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission from 2012 to 2015 and is reported to have worked as an electrician most recently.

Counterterrorism officials questioned the wife and her parents before releasing her Tuesday night, Islam said, adding that investigators were now questioning his brother-in-law and also planned to question any known close associates.

The FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia, and the NYPD bomb squad are analyzing components of the explosive. Relatives and police said Ullah last visited Bangladesh in September to see his wife and newborn son before leaving them behind to return the United States.

He "was living here, went through number of jobs, was not particularly struggling financially or had any known pressures", John Miller, the New York Police Department's deputy commissioner for counterterrorism, said Tuesday on CBS.
