House passes bill to allow concealed weapons across state lines

A new Republican sponsored bill would make it easier for US gun enthusiasts to buy silencers for guns

The U.S. House passed a bill on Wednesday which would make it easier for gun owners to legally carry concealed weapons across state lines.

People can only use their concealed-carry permits in other states that allow the practice if they are carrying a valid government-issued photo ID and are lawfully licensed to possess a concealed handgun. Two months after two of the deadliest shootings in USA history, Republicans were "brazenly moving to hand the NRA the biggest item on its Christmas wish list", said Pelosi, D-Calif.

The vote came just after the 10th anniversary of the Von Maur shootings in Omaha.

"Your fundamental right to keep and bear arms should not end at the state line", the National Rifle Association argues in support of the bill.

Nadler and other Democrats say the concealed-carry bill would force those who in live in states with strong gun laws to abide by states with the weakest and most unsafe concealed-carry laws.

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., told The World-Herald that he had just spoken with Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson, who has advocated for the bill. The bill also doesn't expand which agencies are required to report records to NICS.

But she blasted Republicans for including the measure in a "horrible bill" that she said will overturn tough gun laws in states such as CT and ensure that "the lowest common denominator would reign for the entire country".

"The media profits off of all of this violence that it continues to put in front of us, then laments through you and the other outlets when an act of violence happens", he said.

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who is the co-author of the bipartisan Fix NICS Act, called the bill "a awful, unsafe idea".

J. Thomas Manger, the police chief in Montgomery County, Maryland, says during congressional testimony the devices known as bump stocks have no legitimate sporting or hunting goal. Grassley urged caution, pointing to existing laws on background checks and automatic weapons.

"They recognize that marriage", Hudson said during House floor debate. Thomas Brandon told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday that the ATF and Justice Department would not have initiated the review "if (banning them) wasn't a possibility at the end". The review comes after the Las Vegas gunman used the so-called "bump stock" devices during the deadly October rampage.

The other would direct the Bureau of Justice Statistics to study all crimes involving firearms and report back to Congress in six months about how many involved weapons with "bump fire stocks", accessories that can allow semi-automatic weapons guns to fire at a rate similar automatic ones.

"Before we pass new laws, we should make sure that our current laws are being effectively followed and enforced", Grassley said.

The US House of Representatives has approved a legislation loosening gun regulations and allowing those with permits to carry concealed weapons to legally travel with those firearms to other states.

"Concealed carry reciprocity is the NRA's highest legislative priority in Congress", wrote the NRA in a press release on November 27.

The Air Force has acknowledged that the Texas shooter, Devin Kelley, should have had his name and domestic violence conviction submitted to the National Criminal Information Center database.

Meanwhile an alert from Erich Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America (GOA), claimed Fix NICS "would require that the rolls of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, and ObamaCare be trolled for recipients with PTSD, ADHD, or Alzheimer's-that is, people who have had guardians appointed", the group's legislative council said it was not arguing the bill would create new categories of prohibited people. Fourteen Republicans voted against the bill, which included a measure to strengthen background checks, and six Democrats voted for the bill.
