Eating Small Bits Of Cheese Daily Helps Lower Heart Disease Risks

Participants in the analysis who ate a little bit of cheese every day were less likely to suffer from a stroke or develop heart disease, compared with people who never or only rarely ate it. It may very well be that the people who ate cheese and had lower risks of heart disease may have been doing something else to make sure they were healthy, such as exercising.

Study co-author Li-Qiang Qin - who works in the Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene at Soochow University's School of Public Health in China - and colleagues report their in the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers didn't specify whether one type of cheese was better than the rest. In 2015, the population of the United States consumed the equivalent of of cheese per person, with Cheddar and mozzarella being the most popular choices.

Cheese contains vitamins A, K and D along with calcium, zinc, magnesium and protein.

The new study, however, suggests that this popular dairy product could have the opposite effect on cardiovascular health. They scientists pored over 15 observational studies that included more than 200000 people. The two primary exceptions are ayurveda, which embraces the milk by-product, and the of-the-moment keto diet, which relies on such a high-fat intake that cheese becomes practically a necessity. The people who had the lowest risks for heart disease and stroke were those who consumed, on average, about 40 grams a day-about the size of a matchbook. But cheese also does contain high levels of saturated fat, much like other dairy products.

But don't stock up on the Cheddar just yet; both studies have their own limitations. This basically means that higher quantities of cheese aren't necessarily better.

It's important to understand that the relationship between higher cheese consumption and lower risk of heart disease and stroke is U-shaped rather than linear. Earlier this year, coconut oil made headlines as the American Heart Association declared it unilaterally unhealthy (mbg doctors largely disagree, with a few caveats).
