Canada to Cancel $5.2B Boeing Fighter Jet Contract

Report: Canada canceling purchase of new Boeing fighter jets

Canada is scrapping a plan to buy 18 Boeing Co (BA.N) Super Hornet fighter jets amid a deepening dispute with the USA aerospace company, three sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

According to the sources, next week Ottawa will announce it intends to acquire a used fleet of older Australian F-18 jets.

The Canadian government has canceled a planned fighter-jet purchase from Seattle-based Boeing, apparently in retaliation for a trade dispute with the Trump administration, the Reuters news service reported Tuesday.

One defense expert noted that Britain, Germany and Italy intend to operate both the F-35 and the Eurofighter, evidence that Canada could buy the European jet and still operate with USA air force F-35s. RCAF now operates an ageing fleet of CF-18 fighters, which is due for replacement sometime in the next decade.

Boeing complained to the USA government that Bombardier was receiving subsidies, which in turn allowed it to sell its C-Series civilian passenger aircraft at below-market prices. Boeing alleged that Bombardier was selling the planes at "absurdly low" prices, and the Department of Commerce imposed a preliminary 300 percent import duty on Bombardier's CS 100 planes.

The move to try to acquire fighter jets from Australia coincides with the USA government's decision, based on a Boeing complaint, to hit Bombardier with nearly 300 per cent duties on its CSeries civilian passenger jet.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said the country "won't do business with a company that's busy trying to sue us and put our aerospace workers out of business". That legal process continues with final rulings expected by the U.S. International Trade Commission early next year.

The Australian jets are being considered as interim fighters.

Canada's decision to shun Boeing Co jets could open the way for European rivals seeking to supply new fighters, assuming the government can sort out major procurement challenges, three sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. "It has to be a two-way street, there has to be this mutually beneficial relationship for it to be one that grows, one that both sides are happy and excited about". "Unfortunately, I think they're taking advantage of a [political] context that's favorable to them".
