The protesting students claimed that more than 150 students were taken into custody late on Sunday; the police stated that they took 51 students into preventive custody.

However, the police have denied that the journalists were detained for long; they said they were let go immediately from the police station.

While the body arrived at the village at around 4:30am amidst high security, the last rites were performed at 2pm. Murali - reportedly a physics topper - was a first-year student of MSc in the university.

The university students, according to Hindustan Times, suspected that the suicide note was fake, since the handwriting in the note did not match with Murali's.
