They then awarded the prize to Lubaina Himid for a trio of outstanding shows in Oxford, Bristol and Nottingham.

A production of paintings, drawings and installations that vindicate identity of African diaspora and creativity of black artists has deserved tonight to Lubaina Himid (Zanzibar, Tanzania, 1954) The Turner Prize of Contemporary Art, in an edition that in His roster of finalists has opted for multiculturalism, return to traditional formats such as painting and creative maturity.

THE TURNER Prize 2017 has been awarded to Lubaina Himid, it was announced yesterday evening at a ceremony in Hull Minster, in partnership with Tate and Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

Speaking about the age limit being increased before the victor was announced Alex Farquharson, director of Tate Britain and chairman of the jury, said: "The Turner Prize has always championed emerging artists - it has never been a prize for long service but for a memorable presentation of work in that year".

According to a statement, they praised Himid for "her uncompromising tackling of issues including colonial history and how racism persists today". Her paintings, prints, drawings, and installations are now in the collections of Tate, the Whitworth Art Gallery, and the Leeds City Museum, among other institutions. Previously it had been used as a platform to promote the work of younger artists. A further £5,000 was awarded to each of the other three shortlisted artists.

"For all the black women who never did win it even though they've been shortlisted".

Ms Himid was the oldest artist to be short listed for the prize in its history.

Founded in 1984 and named after English 19th century landscape painter J.M.W. Turner, the Prize is the UK's most high-profile visual arts award.

The jury for the prize comprised Dan Fox, a co-editor of Frieze magazine; critic Martin Herbert; Mason Leaver-Yap, a moving-image scholar at the Walker Art Center and an associate curator at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art; and Emily Pethick, the director of the Showroom gallery.

The exhibition of the four shortlisted artists at Ferens Art Gallery has been seen by more than 90,000 visitors, making it one of the most popular Turner Prize shows outside London. Perhaps seismically. For the first time in a long time (aside from the relentlessly predictable cycle of auction records) contemporary art has elbowed its way back onto the front pages - and thrillingly.
