Driving test changes: 4 December 2017

Driving examiners in England, Wales and Scotland are beginning a 48-hour strike the day a new driving test is launched.

The independent driving part of the test now lasts around 10 minutes. Here, the student will have to drive without turn-by-turn instructions from the examiner. One-fifth of driving tests will not use a sat nav, though, with students being required to follow traffic signs instead.

"It's also significantly reduced the number of times we ask examiners to work at other centres - 1.5 days on average in the last four months", he said. You won't need to set the route - the examiner will do this for you.

The DVSA employs around 1,800 driving examiners and conducts about 7,000 vehicle driving tests on average a day. It has been updated to make it more appropriate for modern driving, and now includes driving while following a satellite navigation system and the removal of some outdated manoeuvres including reversing around a corner.

The PCS union said the new tests were being accompanied by a "flexible working" regime, which gives managers the ability to deploy driving test examiners anywhere they choose without notice.

These changes will apply to all driving tests without exception.

Previously you would be asked the "show me" and "tell me" questions at the start of the test before moving off.

Mike Pence Perfects His Disappearing Act
The Atlantic reports that it's unclear whether Trump had knowledge of the conversation and if the group ever made an offer. A White House advisor said that Trump is prone to teasing Pence about his religious beliefs and other issues.

The changes are created to make sure new drivers have the skills they'll need to help them through a lifetime of safe driving.

The marking criteria is the same, which means a pass will be awarded if no more than 15 faults are made, as well as no serious or unsafe faults.

Prices are set to stay the same too, with a weekday test costing £62, while evenings, weekends and bank holidays will see a £75 fee.

Transport minister Andrew Jones said: "Our roads are among the safest in the world".

Road collisions are the biggest killer of young people.

The DVSA said this was "simply not true", adding that it had recruited more than 320 extra driving examiners in the past year.

However, examiners who are members of the Public and Commercial Services Union are staging a 48-hour strike from today, saying some of the changes are risky. However, you will be tested on either parallel parking, park in a bay - either driving in and out - and pulling up on the right-hand side of the road.
