PC Martin Willis held on for dear life after the vehicle crashed on the A1 near Aberford, North Yorkshire.

He tweeted he could not describe his relief when West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue arrived to take control and pull it back on to the road.

A British police officer was showered with praises for grabbing hold of a van and preventing it from falling as it dangled on a bridge over a highway with the driver trapped inside Friday. According to the statement, he was taken to was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he is being treated for the leg injuries he sustained.

Con. Willis says he could see the van sway every time another vehicle passed.

Two lanes were closed to traffic during the incident.

He walked on to the hard shoulder to the incident, and another driver shouted across to him to say there was a motorist trapped in the van.
