Apple releases fix to safety flaw in Mac working system

Apple patches macOS security hole, breaks file sharing

The issue, discovered in the macOS High Sierra operating system for laptops and desktops that was released in September, would let anyone enter the word "root" when prompted for a username, and provide no password when logging on to the device.

For these users, the security update can be installed again (in fact, it would be automatically installed at some point) after updating to the new version of the operating system. It seems that Apple was predicting a particular order in which users would do things, and this assumption means the original problem can be reintroduced. In order to avoid problems, you need to make sure that you've upgraded to High Sierra 10.13.1, then install the patch and then reboot your computer.

Recently, Mac computers were reported to be facing, what is referred to as the "root" issue bug.

As Wired reports, Apple scrambled to release a macOS High Sierra security update earlier this week to patch up a critical flaw in the system's login process, which, as mentioned, allowed anyone to unlock Macs without even entering a password.

OU faces Georgia at the Rose Bowl in CFB Playoff
Oklahoma had allowed 31 points or more five times during the season, so holding TCU to 17 points is a remarkable performance. Oklahoma and Georgia, teams that rank seventh and 11 in all-time wins, have never played in football before.

Numerous users have confirmed to Wired that Apple's hastily rolled out bug fix is far from flawless itself. As a temporary measure Apple recommends to activate the root user and set the password manually. To do this in the settings section "Users and groups" click on the button with a lock.

In a Medium post today, Ergin today said his Twitter disclosure about the Mac bug was met with "many reactions like a blast". "And worse, two of those Mac users say they've also tried re-installing Apple's security patch after that upgrade, only to find that the "root" problem still persists until they reboot their computer, with no warning that a reboot is necessary".

Developers can download the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility from the link below... "Some bug in authentication is ENABLING root with no password the first time it fails!"

In the case of a fix for this latest vulnerability, "I would imagine [Apple] will be pushing it out as a high priority", Cluley said. "Never mind one from a security and privacy-conscious company such as Apple", Steve Troughton-Smith, a Mac software developer, wrote on Twitter.
