Shohei Ohtani moves another step closer to the majors

Will Japan's Shohei Ohtani join MLB for 2018

Japanese star Shohei Ohtani's hopes of playing in Major League Baseball were given a boost after the USA players union agreed to extend a key deadline that could pave the way for a move.

The players' association must approve any agreement and last Thursday set a Monday deadline.

MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball had already settled on a new framework to replace the old agreement, which expired earlier this month, and the union's approval was the final obstacle remaining for Ohtani to leave the Nippon Ham Fighters and play in the majors next year. News regarding the worldwide star's status should be available at some point Tuesday.

The 23-year-old Nippon Ham Fighters dubbed the "Babe Ruth of Japan" is regarded as one of the hottest properties in baseball, a two-way threat with a fastball clocked at 100mph and an explosive presence at the plate.

Trump on Roy Moore accusations: 'He totally denies it'
Trump said that Alabama voters should not support Doug Jones, the Democratic candidate running against Mr. Asked about the allegations against Moore, the president replied, "Moore denies it".

Hideki Matsui, who came over to the Yankees from Japan in December 2002, told's Deesha Thosar through a translator on Saturday he would he happy to help the team in its recruitment of Ohtani if asked. They reportedly obtained $250,000 from the Marlins, giving them $3.5 million.

When a player is signed for $20 million or less by an Major League Baseball team, the NPB team will be paid 20 percent of that total in return, if a player is paid $25 to $50 million, the NPB team will make 17 1/2 percent of what he signed for, and finally for any player signed for $50 million or more the team will receive a 15 percent return.

Ohtani would have likely signed a deal in excess of nine figures had he waited until his 25th birthday. The rules call for pretty much a continuation of the same system for this offseason: The Japanese club would get a maximum $20 million posting fee, and any Major League Baseball club willing to bid that amount would be able to negotiate with Otani for 30 days. Teams interested in signing him are limited to a minor league contract plus whatever they have available in their global bonus pool. The fee used to be unlimited, but it has been $20 million the past several years. And the end result is that Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani will be playing in the major leagues next season. Both sides are said to want the new system to pay Japanese teams a fee based on the value of the departing player's contract, believed to be between 15% and 20%.

Ohtani then has 21 days to sign after posting, per Sherman.
