A woman was injured after the aircraft came loose from its moorings

It has been learned that the aircraft came down after it was snapped against nearby branches.

Pictures have emerged of the 20-tonne Airlander 10's canopy completely collapsed after the prototype plummeted to the ground.

The world's longest aircraft, Hybrid Air Vehicle's Airlander 10 collapsed at the Cardington airfield in the UK.

Pub landlord and councillor Paul Smith said: 'Sad news for Airship fans, The Airlander has broken free from its mast this morning and has deflated. However, police said they believed the helium would soon dissipate.

On Friday, the Airlander took off on its sixth test flight at Cardington Airfield. One woman has also been reportedly injured in the accident.

A member of staff at Hybrid Air Vehicles, the manufacturer of the craft, sustained minor injuries during the incident at the Cadington airfield near the town of Bedford, the firm said on its Facebook page on Saturday.

In a statement, it said: "The aircraft was not flying at the time of the incident".

"Our initial assessment is that the aircraft broke free from its mooring mast for reasons that will be investigated".

HAV added: "We are testing a brand new type of aircraft and incidents of this nature can occur during this phase of development".

Hybrid Air Vehicles, says it can reach 16,000 feet (4,900 meters), travel at up to 90 miles per hour (148 km/h) and stay aloft for up to two weeks.
