UN Adopts Olympic Truce

Katie Ormerod claimed the silver medal at the snowboard big air World Cup in Milan on Saturday

The resolution was adopted with a bang of the gavel by Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak on Monday to loud applause.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach told the 193-member world body that with the resolution the General Assembly is "creating the conditions for all athletes to compete in peace". The first operative clause of the resolution specifically asks Member States “to ensure the safe passage, access and participation of athletes, officials and all other accredited persons taking part in the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Winter Games”.

Lee state the Truce empathised the organisers commitment to opening a new horizon for winter sports around the world.

It also expressed expectation that the PyeongChang Olympics "will be a meaningful opportunity to foster an atmosphere of peace, development, tolerance and understanding on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia".

"I will make the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games a world-backed peace Olympic event with the adoption of the Olympic truce resolution", Lee said.

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday in a statement "welcomed" the United Nations resolution and added that "the expression of the expectation that it will help promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia reflects the Korean government's commitment to make the PyeongChang event an 'Olympic of Peace'". Then as now, the Olympic Games are a symbol of hope and peace. "In terms of other sports, we are aware that there are North Korean athletes training for cross country (skiing) as well as other ice skating categories", Do said. By adopting this resolution, the global community at the United Nations recognises the power of sport and the relevance of the Olympic Games to bring the world together in peaceful competition, providing hope for a better future.

The two-time Olympian added that she is confident that the upcoming Games "will be one of best platforms not only for transmitting this message but for sharing the Olympic spirit of peace for humanity with the entire world". It redistributes more than 90 per cent of its income to the wider sporting movement, which means that every day the equivalent of 3.4 million United States dollars goes to help athletes and sports organisations at all levels around the world.

Backed by a Government delegation, including Minister of Culture Do Jong-whan, South Korean officials sought to reassure the United Nations of their commitment to ensuring the safety to the Games.

The joint Korean delegation for the Olympics in September 2000 followed the first inter-Korean summit, between former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, three months earlier in June.

The Olympic Winter Games 2018 will take place in PyeongChang, Republic of Korea, from 9 to 25 February 2018 and will be followed by the Paralympic Games from 8 to 18 March 2018.

The Olympic Truce, which traces back to the Ekecheiria (a truce held during the Olympics in ancient Greece), has been an Olympic tradition since it passed the UN General Assembly in October 1993 and took force during the Lillehammer Winter Olympics the next year.

It was updated by the International Olympic Committee in 1992, before they set up the international organisation Olympic Truce in 2000 to honour the tradition.

It urges countries to use this opportunity to harness sport to foster and encourage concrete actions that promote dialogue and reconciliation during the Games and beyond. The resolution was adopted by consensus on Monday at the 72nd General Assembly.
