Telegraph accused of 'bullying' Tory rebel MPs after labelling them Brexit 'mutineers'

Jeremy Corbyn suffers backbench rebellion on Brexit as 19 Labour MPs vote against UK withdrawal from EU

MP have continued to scrutinise the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill amid mounting evidence of Tory unrest about Mrs May's approach to Brexit.

Anna Soubry, one of the leading rebels, initially hit out at the "blatant bullying" by the newspaper of those who intend to defy the government.

But despite the revolt, the measure passed through Parliament easily during the first day of debate over whether to amend the EU Withdrawal Bill.

He tweeted: "I regret any media attempts to divide our party".

The government faces potential defeat on key amendments to the bill if rebel Conservative MPs ally with Labour, increasing the risks for May's minority government.

Anna Soubry has branded the Daily Telegraph's decision to label her fellow Tory MPs as "mutineers" for opposing the government bid to enshrine the time and date of Britain's departure from the European Union in law as a "blatant piece of bullying".

A series of attempts to rewrite the legislation were seen off with Government majorities ranging from 20 to 266.

The government said it wants an implementation period of around two years after Brexit to stop an economically damaging "cliff-edge" - but insists Britain will be fully out of the EU.

Mr Hammond told BBC Radio 5 live the bill, which is now being debated line-by-line by MPs, was "the most important constitutional thing we will do for 50 years" adding: "We might as well do it right".

He said: "I have to say I find this amendment by the government so very unusual, because it seems to me to fetter the government, to add nothing to the strength of the government's negotiating position, and in fact potentially to create a very great problem that could be brought back to visit on us at a later stage".

Conservative MP Sir Bill Cash has told talkRADIO anyone voting against enshrining the leave date in law is effectively trying to reverse the referendum result.

"If it doesn't what will happen is it will get massacred in the House of Lords - quite rightly".
